I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece where I did my undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki. I studied Mathematical Logic and Topology at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, USA. My PhD was in 4-dimensional topology. Subsequently I did some classical knot theory and wandered into programming, technology and the like. Besides being a mathematician by training and conviction my current interests include technology, data and economics. I read a lot of theoretical biology, psychology and (evolutionary) game theory..
I am the Coordinator of Data and Technology at the IZA – Institute of Labor Economics. As head of the Institute’s Research Data Center (IDSC) and Head of its ICT unit I am responsible for all data and technology issues and I hence belong to both the research and the service units of IZA. On the one hand,working as a mathematician, data scientist and economist, I explore new avenues of research and policy in labor economics but also in social science more generally while on the other hand I oversee the Institute’s ICT operations.
My Mathematics research was published in such Journals as Manuscripta Mathematica, Mathematische Zeitschrift, Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, The Kobe Journal of Japan, Topology and Its Applications. My economics research, theoretical and empirical, spans a wide range of topics and is published among others in the International Journal of Manpower, Wirtschaftsdienst, Journal of Forecasting, Cityscape – Journal of Policy Development and Research of the Office of Policy Development and Research at the US Dept. of Housing and Urban development, AStA Wirtschafts – und Sozialstatistisches Archiv, PLoS ONE, Journal of Biological Dynamics etc.
I am a member of the CESifo Research Fellow Network in the area of Economics of Digitization as well as a member of the Editorial Board of PLoS ONE serving as an Academic Editor in Economics. My current research interests include web and big data, time series, forecasting and nowcasting, technology and labor, game theory, statistics, adaptive systems, epidemics etc.
